Explore the Klee House

Denver’s RiNo neighborhood, once known as Riverside North, has a colorful past and was home to foundries, pattern shops, and industrial factories. Today, the neighborhood known for its colorful murals, lively breweries and shops, and art galleries. The area’s history lives on through spaces like Catbird’s Klee House.

Built in 1890 by famous architects— the Baerresen brothers— Klee House was commissioned by Robert Reid for the cost of $5,000 to house his bakery and was situated on Market Street, now Walnut Street. Market Street, much like RiNo, has a storied past. One of the first streets in Denver, it was originally named McGaa Street after William McGaa, an adventurer and one of Denver’s founders. Because of McGaa’s love of strong spirits and violent nature, the street name was changed to Holladay Street after “Stagecoach King'' Ben Holladay. But the street’s rambunctious reputation did not sit well with his family and they requested the name be changed. Thus, it became Market Street before changing to present-day Walnut Street. While out exploring Denver, you can see glimpses of the city’s colorful history, as well as the works of the Baerresen Brothers specifically in LoHi and Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

When the Klee House was purchased, inside a large neon Pegasus sign was discovered, which is still proudly displayed in the house to this day. This hybrid creature was the inspiration for the naming of Catbird.
